'They Might Be G.I. Ants' and the Revealing of More New Season Two Characters at 'Brad's Corner'.

For the usual weekly screencaps bonanza, director Brad Goodchild has posted over images from Episode 1.22: They Might Be G.I. Ants to his blog. As usual, general comments should be left at the entry with the episode's title card.

The same entry also contains an interesting list of mythological figures that will make their debut as guest characters during various Season Two episodes -- Adonis, Nemesis, Envy (Phthonos in ancient Greek), and Scamander. As usual, we'll do a quick mythological rundown of everyone, save for Envy who is self-explanatory.

Adonis was an extremely beautiful mortal youth and the favourite consort of Aphrodite. In some myths, the goddess squabbled with Persephone over the infant, leading to Adonis having to spend part of his time in the Underworld and part of it above. His famous death involved him being killed by a boar that was sent either by a jealous Ares for consorting with Aphrodite or a vengeful Artemis for Aphrodite's role in the death of Theseus' son, Hippolytus, who was one of her favourites.

Interestingly enough, Mr. Goodchild actually made the first announcement about Adonis' debut in Season Two all the way back in early April 2006. We also know that Neil will probably play a substantial role in the episode, given what the director's comments suggest, which is fitting given the Aphrodite connection.

Nemesis is a winged goddess of retribution, particularly of hubris (alternatively spelled as 'hybris' in this context). This would generally be a reference to excessive pride and arrogance, though in Greek mythology, it can also refer to a mortal attempting to equate himself or herself with the gods. The entity of Envy is also, in some cases, tied to the concept of Nemesis.

Fans who are familiar with mythology will probably note right away that Mr. Goodchild did not specify which Scamander would appear in the respective episode. The more well-known of the two is probably more familiarly known as Astyanax, who was the son of the Trojan prince Hector; the boy's father was eventually killed by Achilles, and the baby in turn was flung from the walls of Troy to his death by Achilles' son, Neoptolemus (also known as Pyrrhus).

However, given Mr. Goodchild's comments about Scamander being an interesting character to animate, we at the newsblog think that it's actually a reference to the eponymous river god or personification of the Scamander River in the Troad, the region in Asia Minor which Troy is located. In 'The Iliad', Scamander rebukes Achilles for filling his waters with corpses and attempts to drown him until Hera sends Hephaestus to intervene by attempting to dry-up the river with his fire until the goddess stops him.
